HistoryThe Polish nation was officially established in 966, when Poland's first leader (Duke Mieszko I) converted to Christianity. Then in 1333 Poland achieves cultural and political unity under the rule of Casimir the Great. About 30 years later in 1364 the University of Krakow is founded. The University of Krakow is on the first European universities established. During the 1700s Poland is divided in three parts between Russia, Prussia, and Austria. In 1795 the country of Poland is considered to be "officially" non-existent for 123 years. After World War I, in November of 1918, Poland regains its independence. Poland begins to grow culturally until the September of 1939. This is when Adolf Hitler invades and takes control of Poland, starting World War II. After the war ended in 1945, Poland experiences some political and cultural conflict. They are under Soviet rule and are trying to reform the government. There is a shining moment in 1978 when Pope John Paul II enters the Vatican. He was the first non-Italian Pope in over 500 years. Not until 1997 does Poland form a new Constitution and peace is restored. Poland is now holds international stability and credibility and is also a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). (Pointkouski,Wojtowicz 2010)
